NetGolf Academy fundraiser a success
The event was attended by 40 people.
Etwatwa Warriors Netball Club coach Sibongile Ngcobo has expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the Benoni community for supporting the NetGolf Academy golf day fundraiser held at Benoni Country Club on March 4.
The event, which saw about 40 golfers take to the fairways, was organised to raise funds for the Warriors, a club Ngcobo founded in 2021 to help foster a strong sporting culture among young girls in Etwatwa.

“Thank you to each and every person who supported us today. A special thank you to Debbie McCulloch, who donated 14 T-shirts and tights for the girls. I am humbled by the generosity shown by many Benonians who also donated golf equipment.
“Thank you to everyone who read the story in the Benoni City Times and came out to support us. This proves that the spirit of ubuntu exists,” she said.

Since establishing the club, which currently has 24 U11 and U13 players, Ngcobo, an ice-cream and ice-pop vendor in Etwatwa, has largely funded the team from her own pocket. Despite facing financial difficulties in recent months, her commitment to the young players has remained unwavering.
“This past weekend, we couldn’t attend a tournament in Mayfield because we didn’t have the funds to cover transport and the affiliation fee. It’s been like that since last year. I am unemployed. I survive by selling ice cream and ice pops.

“I’m so happy that we managed to organise the fundraiser. It was difficult to get to where we are. We faced some tough financial challenges because we didn’t have sponsors. I don’t receive support from anyone. The players rely on me for everything.”
Through the assistance of Ekurhuleni Golf Union head of development Loyiso Barnes, the NetGolf Academy was launched to support both netball and golf development in Etwatwa and Daveyton.

“I’m grateful I found a partner like Loyiso, who is able to step in whenever we need assistance. We arranged this golf day to ask for help so that the club can grow.”
She said the proceeds will help cover essentials like training shoes, equipment and tournament costs.
“The proceeds from the event will support our development programmes and will ease the challenges faced by my girls in particular. We are now going to be able to afford transport and affiliation fees.”
