Martins Seed Foundation brings hope to communities in Benoni
Floyd Martins honours community leaders within Ekurhuleni
The Martins Seed Foundation continues to plant seeds of hope and recognition in communities across Ekurhuleni through initiatives that empower women, youth and underprivileged residents.
Based in Wattville and founded by Floyd Martins in 2014 (formally registered as an NPO in 2025), this community-driven organisation focuses on uplifting residents by recognising positive leadership, supporting social initiatives and creating platforms that celebrate the local heroes.
“We believe that when communities recognise and support their local heroes, it motivates others to also contribute positively,” he said.
One of the foundation’s most meaningful initiatives is the Lerato Martins Community Development Awards, created in honour of Martins’ late daughter.
Despite living with Cerebral Palsy, Lerato’s life symbolised courage, resilience and unconditional love. Her story continues to inspire the foundation’s work and the awards that celebrate individuals who embody compassion and dedication to helping others.
The annual Lerato Martins Community Development Awards was established to honour the late Lerato and recognise individuals and organisations making a significant impact in their communities.
The first awards ceremony took place in August 2024 at the Wattville Day Care Centre, during which seven community members were honoured for their contributions.
By 2025, the initiative had grown, attracting 15 nominees from different areas across Ekurhuleni.
When this year’s nominations closed, 40 were received, with 16 nominees shortlisted, reflecting the project’s growing reach and influence.
You can vote for your favourite nominee until July 15, and the awards ceremony will be held on August 8 at Wattville Day Care Centre.
The awards form part of the foundation’s annual Women’s Day celebration, an event that brings together hundreds of residents to celebrate empowerment, unity and community leadership.
Last year’s ceremony drew more than 270 guests and recognised several inspiring individuals across categories such as community service, leadership and innovation.
Through these initiatives, the foundation hopes to continue inspiring residents, encouraging volunteerism and shining a spotlight on the many people who work tirelessly behind the scenes to uplift their communities.
