Stay safe and be cautious on the road this Easter

Easter long weekend: motorists are urged to exercise extra caution during this period.

As South Africans prepare for the Easter long weekend, traffic volumes are expected to rise on major routes including the N1, N3 and N4.

With recent heavy rains and shifting travel patterns, motorists are urged to exercise extra caution, as accidents and breakdowns typically increase during this period.

The South African Motor Body Repairers’ Association (SAMBRA) advises motorists to remain calm and follow three key steps in the event of an accident:

Step 1: Check
• Stop your vehicle, switch on hazard lights and assess the scene
• Take photos before moving vehicles
• Check for injuries and wait for emergency services

Step 2: Call
• Call 112 (mobile) or 10177 (landline) if there are injuries.
• Report the accident to the nearest police station within 24 hours.
• Inform your insurer and supply them with the relevant case numbers.

Step 3: Record
• Collect names, ID numbers and contact details of all parties involved.
• Note vehicle details of emergency personnel and towing services.
• Record the time, location and road conditions.

Motorists are advised not to admit liability and to avoid unauthorised towing.

“If you are insured, always contact your insurer’s emergency line. If uninsured, insist on a written quotation upfront, including towing and
storage fees,” Juan Hanekom, the SAMBRA national director advised.

Minor crashes can be reported online via the NaTIS system within 24 hours, while serious incidents must still be reported at a police station.

In the event of a breakdown:
• Move your vehicle to a safe place and switch on hazards.
• Place a reflective warning triangle at least 45m away from the vehicle, to warn passing motorists.
• Contact roadside assistance or your insurer.
• Use an accredited SAMBRA workshop for all repairs.
• Keep your fuel tank sufficiently filled to avoid being stranded.

With increased traffic, unpredictable weather and possible fuel shortages, motorists are encouraged to stay prepared and vigilant to ensure safer travel this Easter.
