Actonville SAPS commander shares safety tips for pedestrians
To avoid accidents on the road, pedestrians are urged to follow these simple tips to stay safe.
The station commander of the Actonville SAPS, Colonel Mbhazima Maswanganyi, has urged pedestrians to remain alert and cautious on the roads, especially in busy areas and during peak hours.
“Many pedestrian accidents happen on our roads, so it is important that residents know what to do before attempting to cross the busy roads,” said Maswanganyi.
Here are key safety tips:
• Stay visible at all times
Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially at night or in poor weather conditions, so drivers can see you clearly.
• Use designated crossings
Always cross at pedestrian crossings, traffic lights or bridges where available. Avoid crossing between parked cars or on busy roads.
• Obey traffic signals
Do not cross when the pedestrian light is red. Wait for the signal and ensure vehicles have come to a complete stop.
• Stay alert and avoid distractions
Avoid using your phone, wearing earphones, or anything that takes your attention away from the road while walking.
• Make eye contact with drivers
Before crossing, ensure that drivers have seen you and are slowing down.
• Walk on sidewalks
Where possible, always use sidewalks.
If there is no pavement, walk facing oncoming traffic so you can see approaching vehicles.
• Be extra cautious at night and in bad weather
Rain and darkness reduce visibility for drivers, so take extra care when crossing or walking near roads.
• Avoid consuming alcohol when walking
Being under the influence of alcohol can impair judgment and reaction time, increasing the risk of accidents.
“Pedestrian safety is just as important as driver responsibility. We urge community members to remain vigilant and take simple precautions that can save lives,” said Maswanganyi.
