Sassy Seniors roll into new challenge with bowls introduction at Lake Club Benoni

The event was held to introduce the elderly ladies to lawn bowls.

Excitement filled the air as the Sassy Seniors and members of the Cancer Association of Reiger Park stepped onto the green for their first taste of lawn bowls at Lake Club Benoni.

While many of their early deliveries sailed well past the jack, enthusiasm outweighed accuracy, with their eagerness to learn suggesting it won’t be long before they find their rhythm.

The initiative was the brainchild of Lake Club bowls member Natalie Manchest, who previously played hockey with members of the group. Wanting to introduce something new, she saw bowls as an ideal, low-impact way for the women to stay active.

“I’m from Reiger Park. We weren’t exposed to bowls. I thought it would be a good way for the ladies to exercise,” said Manchest.

“I played hockey with them for years, so I approached the club to host a fun morning and introduce them to the sport. That’s where the idea came from.”

Manchest praised the club’s management for their warm hospitality, as well as top bowlers Wilma Richardson and Cherry-Ann Mills for volunteering their time to coach the newcomers.

“When I pitched it, management was over the moon. They even went out of their way to provide refreshments to welcome the ladies. I really appreciate it,” she said.

“I’m also thankful to Wilma and Cherry-Ann for stepping in to guide the ladies through the basics.”

The Sassy Seniors group meets four times a week, taking part in activities such as swimming, dancing and art, all with the goal of staying active and connected.

Director Lizette Kivido said the group thrives on embracing new challenges.

“We recently completed a first aid course, and today it’s bowls. We are senior ladies trying to stay fit and active,” she said.

“When they’re exposed to something new, the excitement is immediate. They go home feeling proud, having ticked something off their bucket list.”

Lake Club bowls chairperson Sandra Mackay said the day reflected the true spirit of community.

“It’s about people coming together to enjoy the game while recognising and uplifting organisations that work tirelessly to support others,” she said.
