#RECIPE: Scrummy winter dish for pups

Natural flavours help boost immunity and keeps your pup’s gut healthy.

The first cold snap has made a wet and stormy appearance, sending pressure cookers into a steamy fuss to cook up hearty soups and stews.

Its comforting aroma may even beckon your furry companions into the kitchen, licking their lips and hoping for a taste.

The Animal Guardians’ (TAG) Annie Jungmann cautions against sharing human comfort food with dogs, as spices such as curry and chilli could cause severe gastrointestinal distress, including vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach cramps and excessive gas.

Other ingredients such as garlic and onion, fresh or powdered, are toxic to dogs and could lead to the animal becoming anaemic,” she said.

Instead, Jungmann shared TAG’s tasty chicken stew recipe, which is packed with vitamins to boost your pooch’s immunity and keep their bellies full during the teeth-chattering cold months.

Ingredients:
• Boneless chicken breasts
• Pumpkin
• Brown rice

Method :
• Boil cubed pumpkin in a large pot until soft.
• Add raw chicken strips and simmer until cooked.
• Lastly add brown rice and mix thoroughly.
• Do not add any spices to the mix rather let the natural flavours infuse into a yummy winter treat.
• Serve to your wet-nosed pal at room temperature.

TAG will be home to many furry residents this winter. Help keep their bellies full by donating dry dog and cat food as well as yummy treats.

Donations can be made to TAG Standard Bank (cheque account), account number: 10106261256, branch code: 051001. Use the reference “Winter”.

Alternatively, deliver the urgent food supplies to 86 Cloverdene Road, Van Ryn, Benoni.
