Faith and family: Crystal Park’s Phikhona is turning 100
Reaching a century, Phikhona Njoko is excitedly waiting for her 100th birthday.
As Phikhona Matrina Njoko prepares to celebrate her 100th birthday on May 26, she reflected with Benoni City Times on a lifetime of faith, family, love and cherished memories that have shaped her journey.
Originally from KwaZulu-Natal, born in Kwanobamba, Phikhona is a mother of five children and has witnessed decades of change throughout her life.
Today, she lives with her youngest daughter, Phindile Makgale (76), who said she felt it was important to care for her mother and have her close by so she can look after her.

Despite approaching a century of life, Phikhona remains strong and still remembers stories from her childhood.
She believes traditional foods have played an important role in maintaining her health over the years.
“I ate a lot of traditional foods, like isijabane, ucuku, amasi and umfino, growing up, and that is what has kept me healthy. Our foods today are not healthy,” she said.
Growing up in a household where her father had two wives, she was the firstborn of the second wife.
It has taught her how to be a leader and how to care for those around her.
Faith has also remained central to Phikhona’s life and family values.
According to the family, prayer and reading the Bible continue to play an important role in their daily lives.
“Prayer is the way. Reading the Word is important. Life is in the hands of God, and it is a gift, so we ask for everything from the one who has all control over everything,” Phikhona said.
Phindile described her mother as loving and caring and said they are really close and very patient with each other.
“My mother used to buy me cute clothes when I was younger. I remember that all the kids and teachers at school would compliment my matching outfits. I was the coolest kid in the neighbourhood thanks to my mom,” Phindile reflected with a smile on her face.

Phikhona loves order; her daughter is a witness to how her mother has always been specific and strict.
“My mother has always been so strict, but now I thank her because it has shaped me to be who I am.
“Now it is me who tells her to slow down with the sugar and coffee; it is a full circle moment,” she said.
The family’s story also touched members of their faith community.
The pastor from the church Phikhona and her daughter attend, Msutu Radabe, and his wife, are the ones who reached out to the Benoni City Times about the milestone birthday.

They spoke warmly of Phikhona and Phindile and the importance of celebrating and honouring older generations.
As she prepares to celebrate a century of life, Phikhona continues to be surrounded by faith, family and a community that values the wisdom, memories and love she has shared through the years.
