EMPD crime blitz

Operations have been stepped up in an effort to fight crime.

From June 2 to 3, officers of the EMPD conducted various bylaw enforcement and crime-prevention operations.

The successes include:

By-law enforcement
• EMPD Bronberg Precinct officers, together with Ekurhuleni City Planning and the Department of Social Development, conducted by-law operations throughout Benoni.

The joint law enforcement team followed up on unauthorised land use, where rental rooms were illegally constructed and illegal electricity connections were discovered.

“The caretaker of the property was served with a notice to cease operations and penalties were issued on the owner’s municipal bill,” said EMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa.

“The matter was further referred to the City of Ekurhuleni’s (CoE) City Planning offices for further action.

• Illegal traders’ operations were also brought to an end during the operation.
Those found operating without permits were issued with notices and their goods confiscated.

• In response to complaints from members of the Chief Albert Luthuli community, two illegally erected permanent structures were demolished.

It was alleged that the building was being used for criminal activities.

• An inspection was conducted at a newly opened day care facility, following complaints received from members of the community.

“It was alleged that the facility was not safe for children,” said Thepa.

“An inspection was conducted where it was found that, in line with CoE by-laws, the facility did not meet the requirements for partial use as a crèche, private hostel, or aftercare centre. A 72-hour compliance notice was issued and follow-up visits will be conducted.

Crime prevention
On June 3, the EMPD Tracing Unit, Task Team and Kingsway Precinct officers, in conjunction with Putfontein SAPS detectives, arrested three men, aged between 36 and 60.

• Two stolen and hijacked vehicles were recovered in Springs and Benoni.

Officers of the EMPD Eastern Region Task Team recovered an abandoned white Toyota Land Cruiser V8 station wagon in Etwatwa West.

It was confirmed the vehicle was reported as stolen in Krugersdorp.

EMPD Kingsway Precinct officers recovered an abandoned vehicle in Lindelani, Kingsway, shortly after it was reported as hijacked.

• Two undocumented men, with no form of identification, were arrested in Springs on charges of contravention of the immigration act.

• Officers of the EMPD Tracing Unit and Putfontein SAPS detectives arrested a suspect wanted for assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
