Pantry a beacon of hope for city’s needy

“Give what you can, share what you have and change a life.”

For the past six years, the Community Pantry in Rothsay Street, Benoni CBD has served as a beacon of hope for the city’s needy, homeless and vulnerable residents.

The initiative was established under the motto “a small act of kindness can change a life”, offering clothing, basic necessities and, most importantly, support for people who feel lost and forgotten in the face of hardship.

“Every day, we meet people facing unimaginable hardship; parents facing the heartbreak of not being able to clothe their children and people hanging on to a sliver of hope after losing everything,” said Junaid Mhetu.

“Through the generosity of our community, we are able to ease the burden, reminding those in need that they are not forgotten and not alone.”

Mhetu said the daily shower programme gives people living on the streets an opportunity to regain their dignity through access to a warm, safe and clean space to wash.

“Something as simple as a warm shower becomes a powerful moment of dignity,” he said. “It offers more than water, soap, towels and lotion — it offers respect, comfort and care in difficult times.”

In order to continue its work, the pantry is appealing for donations of clothing, especially men’s clothing, toiletries and personal care items, bedding, as well as pre-loved school uniforms.

“Kindness is a gift anyone can afford,” said Mhetu. “We share love through action, serving people from all walks of life regardless of race, gender, faith or background.”
