SPCA sets sights on affordable clinic, more services
The society plans to open a veterinary practice
The Benoni SPCA reflected on another year of protecting vulnerable animals while unveiling plans to expand its services, including the establishment of an affordable veterinary clinic, during its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on July 15.
Members, volunteers, staff and supporters gathered to review the organisation’s activities for the financial year ending March 31 and discuss priorities aimed at strengthening animal welfare across the Benoni area.
A key announcement made during the meeting was the society’s plan to open a veterinary practice after being approached by a veterinarian interested in operating from the SPCA premises. The proposed clinic will provide affordable veterinary services to pet owners who cannot afford private veterinary care, with a primary focus on sterilisation procedures and the treatment of animals.
The society also confirmed it will continue working with Mercury Veterinary Hospital and Oakfield Veterinary Hospital, whose support with sterilisation programmes has helped reduce the number of unwanted animals entering the shelter.
In addition to expanding veterinary services, the SPCA plans to invest in staff development by providing training opportunities and promoting employees’ mental wellbeing, recognising the demanding nature of animal welfare work.
The AGM also highlighted the organisation’s impact over the past year. Inspectorate statistics showed that 1 873 animals were collected, 227 cruelty investigations were conducted and seven animal cruelty cases were opened, underscoring the ongoing need for the society’s services.
The society further reported successful adoption and outreach sterilisation programmes, while encouraging residents to continue supporting its work through donations, volunteering and responsible pet ownership.
“Our future plans are centred on expanding access to affordable animal healthcare while continuing to protect and care for vulnerable animals in our community,” said Thomas Mohlake, the manager at Benoni SPCA.
