Two airlifted to hospital following highway crash

The occupants of the bakkie sustained serious injuries.

The driver and passenger of a silver Ford Bantam bakkie were airlifted to hospital following a serious vehicle collision on the N12 highway, near the Tom Jones Street on-ramp, on July 27.

According to EMPD media liaison officer Millicent Kekana, the collision between the bakkie and a non-municipal refuse removal vehicle occurred at 14:30, resulting in all east-bound lanes being closed.

“Afternoon traffic was brought to a standstill to allow room for a medical transport helicopter to land,” she said.

“The occupants of the light motor vehicle were airlifted to a local hospital for medical care. Both the driver and passenger sustained serious injuries.”

The driver of the truck escaped the incident unharmed.

Investigations into the cause of the crash are currently underway.
