Benoni High Pipe Band ended its golden jubilee on a high note, once again being named the Pipe Band’s Association of South Africa (PBASA) national champions.

Piercing the silence on July 25 at St Benedict’s College, bands from across the country gathered to participate in the finale of the piping season.

With their kilts perfectly pleated and chanters wailing through the crisp winter air, the musicians marched in unison, wowing the judges with their performances.

It was, however, Benoni High’s band that walked away not only as the South African champions but also the Champion of Champions, marking the band’s 24th national title since its inception in 1976.

Reabetswe Taele once again placed first in the junior as well as the open drum major category, thus claiming the title of Champion of Champions, making this her fourth consecutive year of eight South African titles.

The Benoni Mactalla also had reason to celebrate being named the Drum Corps South African Champions for the second consecutive year and securing their place second overall.

“I am ecstatic about the results; this is how one celebrates a 50th anniversary,” said drum major Callan Stephen.

“In 2025, Benoni High Pipe Band members Reabetswe Taele, Cameron Wittstock and I were the first scholars to be granted the opportunity to play for Benoni Mactalla at a Grade 2 level, the premier level of South African piping.

“We have grown immensely as musicians, bringing a new challenge to the entire band.”

Master in Charge for the past 10 years and Benoni High educator Malcolm Engles congratulated the band, their families, and tutors on their dedication and commitment throughout the year.

“Results like these speak of a piping community who work tirelessly doing what they love. Long live this rich tradition which has touched the hearts of thousands,” he said.
