EMPD continues to clamp down on illegal trading

Operations are geared to ensuring traders comply with municipal by-laws.

The EMPD By-law Compliance and Enforcement Unit continued its blitz against illegal trading, turning its attention to Mayfield and Cloverdene on July 26.

From 10:00 to 13:00, officers descended on Mayfield Square, in Daveyton, as well as the Cloverdene Shopping Centre, targeting hawkers and informal traders.

Those found to be operating without valid and necessary permits, issued in accordance with City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) municipal by-laws, watched as their stock, including fresh produce, plastic ware, cleaning utensils, toilet paper, as well as pots containing cooked food, which were being prepared next to the side of the road, were confiscated.

Seized items were transported to the Boksburg EMPD pound for safekeeping.

“Clean-up operations centred around by-law enforcement, specifically relating to informal trade, will continue as we intensify our commitment to ensuring a safe and clean City for all residents,” said EMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa.
