NPO partners with estate for owl release

The Owlproject.org NPO, in continued collaboration with the La Como Lifestyle Estate, Boksburg, recently hosted another owl release day as part of its 21-day barn owl (Tyto alba) release programme.

The owls were recovered from the roof of a home by the SPCA Randburg, which then brought them into the care of Owlproject.org.

Itumeleng Maroga, the project co-ordinator at Owlproject.org, explained that La Como was the perfect setting for the release because estates are an ideal habitat for barn owls, especially if they have owl boxes.

“These owls play a crucial role in naturally controlling rodent populations. As skilled hunters, they offer a poison-free, eco-friendly solution to keeping rats in check around stables and farms,” she said.

“The owls, now about two months old, will be released after completing the 21-day release programme. This carefully managed approach gives them time to acclimatise to their new environment, while still receiving food support, increasing their chances of survival once fully independent.”

This initiative is part of a broader environmental education campaign that highlights the critical role owls play in maintaining ecological balance. It also aims to dispel long-standing myths and misconceptions about owls, fostering greater public appreciation for these important birds of prey.

“This programme is not only about conservation, but about shifting mindsets and educating communities on the importance of owls in urban and rural ecosystems,” said Maroga.

As a registered NPO, Owlproject.org relies on public donations to continue its work in township schools and communities.

“By giving a hoot for our owls, partners like Owlproject.org and the La Como Lifestyle Estate continue to inspire action and awareness in the name of biodiversity and sustainable coexistence,” Maroga added.
