Captain Christopher Britz led from the front with a magnificent century as World Sports Betting (WSB) Eastern Storm secured a clinical seven-wicket victory over Eastern Cape Iinyathi in the Dafabet Pro50 Shield at WSB Willowmoore Park on September 20.

Britz sent the quiet venue into a frenzy when he brought up his century in spectacular fashion. He smashed a six that landed on the roof to move to 99 before finding the boundary down the long-off region two balls later in the 29th over, sparking celebrations from his teammates in the dugout.

The Eastern Storm skipper finished unbeaten on 132 off 136 balls, including nine fours and four sixes, and shared a match-winning 162-run third-wicket partnership with Kabelo Sekhukhune to help the hosts chase down their target of 278.

Sekhukhune, who came to the crease with Eastern Storm on 78/2 following the early dismissals of openers Jurie Snyman and Ronan Herrmann, remained unbeaten on 80 off 85 balls, with five fours and a six.

Chasing 278 after restricting Iinyathi to 277/9, Eastern Storm suffered an early setback when Snyman edged Masiphuthando Ntini to Mncedisi Malika behind the stumps.

Herrmann and Britz then steadied the innings with a 65-run second-wicket partnership before Herrmann was caught by Nathan Roux at long-on while attempting to clear the boundary off Kgaudise Molefe.

Herrmann’s dismissal paved the way for the decisive third-wicket stand between Britz and Sekhukhune. The partnership put Eastern Storm firmly in control before Molefe eventually dismissed the skipper, who was caught at long-off by Christiaan du Toit.

Sekhukhune was joined by Dewan Marais, with the pair adding an unbeaten 40 runs for the fourth wicket to take Eastern Storm to 280/3 and secure maximum points for the home side.

Earlier, Du Toit produced a superb individual performance for the visitors, scoring 103 off 88 balls, including five fours and four sixes, to help Iinyathi post 277/9.

However, the left-handed batter received limited support as wickets fell regularly around him.

Roux (34) and Lihle Sizani made a positive start, putting on 49 for the opening wicket before Chad Classen broke the partnership. Sizani (37) and Du Toit then added 100 for the second wicket, but Amaan Khan’s dismissal of Sizani triggered a collapse as Eastern Storm’s bowlers applied sustained pressure.

Apart from a fighting 28 from tailender Andile Mhletywa, none of the remaining batters could make a substantial contribution as Iinyathi struggled to build on the strong foundation laid by Roux and Sizani.

Khan, Tumelo Simelane and Leander Lubbe claimed two wickets each, while Classen, Snyman and Aryan Gopalan took one wicket apiece.

In the CSA First-Class three-day Shield, played from September 17 to September 19, the two teams shared the spoils after the match ended with Eastern Storm on 141/4 in its second innings, with Iinyathi yet to begin its second innings.
