Recycling hub officially launched in Farrarmere

“This launch marks yet another step towards a greener Benoni. We set out our recycling drive in March with the focus on creating an awareness towards recycling."

The Benoni Lakes officially opened the Belvedere School Recycling Hub in Farrarmere on September 3.

The hub will be dedicated to electronic waste, glass, paper, plastic bottles and cans recycling.

According to the Lions’ Pierre Marneweck, this initiative was started as part of the club’s environmental drive.

“This launch marks yet another step towards a greener Benoni. We set out our recycling drive in March with the focus on creating an awareness towards recycling. This culminated in the first ever Benoni Environmental Expo in June.

Pierre Marneweck and Benoni Lakes Lions Club president Diane Townsend officially launch the Recycling Hub in Farrarmere.

“Caring for the environment is one of the five pillars that we as the Lions Club International are passionate about. This hub is the result of a lot of hard work, passion, dedication and commitment.

“Our aim has always been to continue serving the community by looking after the environment and ultimately create a dedicated recycling hub with the intention of even more to come,” he said.

Marneweck added that there has to be educational programmes to teach the public about the different methods of recycling.

“There are special ways that certain things have to be recycled. For example, by law computers have to be recycled in a specific manner.

The Benoni Lakes Lions, community members and Belvedere School staff members planted trees at Belvedere School.

“Bring it to an area that’s easily accessible and open to the public. People are welcome to drop these things in the bins here. We’ll manage and keep it clean.

“We are working together with Desco Electronic Recyclers, the Glass Recycling Company and Belvedere School, which has a fantastic initiative where they recycle and reuse their own plastic recycling.

He urged Benonians to make use of the hub as they are also doing it to support causes such as recycling for sight and tops and tags for wheelchairs.

“We would like to invite the community and residents of the greater Benoni area to support this hub in its dual purpose of turning Benoni environmentally green and recycling for a cause. Join us, support us and do you part for a better future for all.”

Desco’s business development manager Nonceba Masango said their aim is to protect the environment to make sure nothing hazardous gets thrown away.

“Let’s all make sure we protect the environment. Drop it off in these containers. Let’s keep our country clean,” she said.

Ward 28 Clr Mary Goby told the City Times she was excited to be a part of this project.

“I’m grateful to the Lions for doing this. It’s been a dream of mine to have our own recycling hub. Having this hub in Farrarmere has made my day. I’m thankful to the Lions for pushing it and to Desco for actually doing something,” she said.

The day began with the planting of olive trees and the tree of the year – pompom – at Belvedere School in honour of Arbor Week. The club also planted more trees at Siyathemba Daycare Centre in Daveyton and at Elàte Eatery in Rynfield.
