Driver of getaway car arrested after robbery in Farrarmere
Homeowner foils active robbery
The driver of a silver Toyota Etios, allegedly involved in a house robbery in Garrett Street, Farrarmere, on November 22 was arrested on the N12, following a high-speed chase.
According to Captain Nomsa Sekele, spokesperson for the Benoni SAPS, a woman and her daughter were at home when they heard the main gate to the property opening.
“Two men, one armed with a metal rod, broke the locked glass sliding door before the women could raise an alarm. The intruders demanded access to the safe,” she said.
“During this time, the victim’s husband arrived home, noticing the silver vehicle parked in the street.
“Upon noticing that the gate was open, he rushed into the house.”
The two intruders allegedly ran from one of the rooms.
“One of the suspects struck the husband with the rod but it did not deter him from pursuing them as they fled the scene,” said Sekele.
“While in pursuit he was able to report their whereabouts to the operator at the 10111 call centre, which enabled members of the Benoni Flying Squad to respond.”
Local security personnel also responded and the vehicle was brought to a stop as it headed towards Johannesburg.
“Two of the suspects fled the scene. However, the driver was arrested and is currently detained at the Benoni Police Station,” she said.
“A cell phone and jewellery were reported stolen.”
