BFS crime in brief

The suspects, aged between 25 and 32, will be appearing in court soon

Routine weekend operations conducted by the members of the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) led to the arrest of five suspects as well as the recovery of a firearm.

Firearm recovery
On January 21 at 14:30, members recovered a .22 revolver with eight live rounds of ammunition in a vehicle at the Tom Jones off-ramp.

The driver of the vehicle was allegedly involved in an accident and fled the scene.

“Upon arriving at the scene, officers found the firearm inside the vehicle,” said Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, spokesperson for the unit.

“Further investigations led to the serial number being run through the system, it was found that the firearm was linked to a 2014 Reiger Park case.”

Arrest
Two suspects sought in connection with a case of common robbery in Springs, were traced to Bonaero Park.

The pair were taken to Springs SAPS for detention.

Recovery of copper cabling
While conducting routine patrols in the Benoni CBD, on January 22, members were approached by an anonymous informant claiming that a suspected copper thief was attempting to sell copper at a scrapyard in Great North Road.

“Members rushed to the scene and found five bags of copper,” said Giblin.

“The suspect could not produce the relevant paperwork pertaining to the goods, valued at R15 000, and was immediately arrested.”

Possession of drugs
Two suspects were arrested around Emaphupeni, Etwatwa on charges of being in possession of drugs.

Dagga and heroine were confiscated in the separate incidents.

Abandoned vehicles
• A white International truck and two trailers were recovered in Main Road, Anderbolt. The vehicle is wanted in connection with a Midrand-based case of fraud.

• A white Hyundai H100 was recovered at Nayaga Street, Actonville. The vehicle was reported as hijacked in Brakpan.

Investigations in all cases are continuing.
