School journey ends on a high note for mom and daughter

Mom and daughter walked the journey together since Hayley started grade 00 at St Dunstan’s College.

A proud mother whose daughter is among the learners with outstanding matric marks at St Dunstan’s College, has patted herself on the back for the good job she did in contributing to her child’s studies.

Lorraine Barry, who works at the school as the Chair of Council, has had the privilege of seeing her daughter, Hayley, who bagged three distinctions, develop into a full grown woman with good learning skills.

Mom and daughter walked the journey together since Hayley started grade 00 at St Dunstan’s College and maintained a good parent-school relationship.

They shared morning and afternoon rides together from home and to school for 12 years.

“I am happy that my daughter passed. It was quite a journey,” the relieved mother said.

Lorraine emphasised the need for parents to play a role in their children’s studies.

According to Hayley, having her mom working at the school, “wasn’t too bad”.

“We spoke about it early on and my mom made sure there was a balance between being my mother and the chair of Council for the school. There haven’t been any additional pressures and I haven’t been looked at differently by peers or other educators,” Hayley said.

The 18-year-old, who will study quantity surveying at the University of Pretoria, said she enjoyed every second of her matric year.
