Cat snared in Rynfield

The public is encouraged to report cases where animals have been caught with a snare.

The Benoni SPCA has urged the public to remove any active snares they may come across and to report any cases of snares to them.

This comes after a Rynfield resident recently saved a cat from a deadly snare after it came into their property in Thom Street.

According to the resident, who wished to remain anonymous, the cat had a snare around its neck but they managed to get the snare off and the cat seemed uninjured.

Following the discovery of the snare in Thom Street, the Benoni SPCA will soon visit the veld near Linmed Hospital to search for active snares.

Inspector Thomas Mohlake has condemned the use of snares, saying these can result in a painful death for any animal.

He said the SPCA rescued a cat from a tree with a snare embedded in its neck near Pretoria Road in Rynfield last year.

“When the SPCA responds to a case of snares, we transport the animal to a vet for further examination.

“To create awareness around the issue, we educate people on our Facebook page about the illegal practice of laying traps or snares for animals,” said Mohlake.

When the Benoni City Times asked who they may suspect is setting the snares, Mohlake said they cannot speculate but he emphasised that the act of laying traps for animals contravenes with Animal Protection Act.

Report cases of snares and animals caught in snares to the Benoni SPCA on 011 894 2814 during office hours or to their emergency number, 073 511 2261, after hours.
