Flying squad successes

The suspects aged 23 to 40 years will be appearing in the local Magistrates courts soon.

From March 14 to 16, members of the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) once again cracked down on criminals, bringing five suspects to book and recovering two firearms.

Malicious damage to property
On March 14 at 09:00, two suspects were arrested on charges of theft and malicious damage to property on Lakefield Road and Sunnyside Avenue.

Firearms seized
Following up on information received from Crime Intelligence, members were deployed to execute a search warrant at a residence in Isivana Section, Tembisa.

“Upon arrival officers found a Dashprod 5.56mm rifle with two magazines and 42 live rounds of ammunition as well as a Taurus 9mm pistol with one magazine and 21 live rounds of ammunition,” said Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, BFS spokesperson.

“It is suspected the firearms may have been used in cash in transit robberies. No suspects were arrested but investigations and are continuing to trace those involved.”

Common robbery
On March 16 at 14:00, upon leaving the BFS offices in Northmead, Sergeant Jaco Powell and Warrant Officer JP Khumalo arrested three suspects in a white Toyota Etios, who are wanted in connection with cases of common robbery.

It is suspected that men’s victims were mostly targeted at shopping malls.

“Powell recognised the vehicle from a photograph he had received a couple of weeks ago and immediately jumped into action, cornering the vehicle Great North and Hospital roads,” said Giblin.

“The suspects were taken to the Primrose SAPS where a case against the men was opened. The vehicle was positively identified from camera footage.”

A white Hino was found at a shopping centre in Pomona, Kempton Park, while a white Isuzu was recovered in Main Reef and Hospital roads, Brakpan.
