R55 000 worth of traffic fines issued

Operations are determined through crime statistics and data analysis.

Under the watchful eye of Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, Benoni SAPS along with other law enforcement stakeholders once again cracked the whip on criminals, on March 16.

Formulated according to crime patterns and analysis, the multidisciplinary operation, O Kae Molao, focuses on area-specific hotspots in an attempt to weed out criminals and criminal activities.

According to Captain Nomsa Sekele, spokesperson for the Benoni Police Station, concentrated roadblocks are often set up in Kingsway as data indicates that the area is often characterised by criminal activities.

“The operation also sees concerted blitzes being conducted at Shaft Five, Van Ryn and surrounding areas where illegal mining is prevalent,” she said.

“It is hoped that through these intensive operations, the zama zama’s operations are continuously disrupted to the point that they may soon opt to leave the area.”

She further stated that planning on having selected open shafts in the area permanently closed, is at an advanced stage.

Successes stemming from the recent operation include:
• Five suspects were arrested on charges of dealing drugs while another was nabbed for possession.

• 38 people were arrested for being in the country illegally.

• Nine liquor outlets were closed for dealing without a liquor license and more than 385l of alcohol was seized.

• Inspections at six second-hand goods dealers were conducted and fines to the value of R9 000 were issued due to noncompliance.

• Members of the EMPD issued 134 fines amounting to R55 400.
