Community upskilling programme’s first graduates awarded certificates
The programme was started last year to help with the unemployment situation in Wattville.
The first graduates of the Skills Development Learnership Programme received their certificates after completing the fibre optics and cabling course on March 9.
According to Ward 39 Clr Kenny Ranyawa, they started this programme last year to upskill and help the youth of Wattville acquire critical skills needed in the workplace.
Ranyawa explained that the programme focused on youth without matric and those with matric certificates but no work experience.
Additionally, it aimed to keep the youth engaged and away from substance and drug abuse, which have engulfed the community, said Ranyawa.
He said the programme offers courses like interior design, electrical training and technical construction skills training, among others.
Ranyawa said the community was grateful to the economic development sector and Bongoe Corporative Lease Management for helping the youth of Wattville.
“Through the partnership, we will provide more opportunities for our youth to acquire more needed skills that will assist them in the job market and business sectors.
“We thank the director of this programme, Charity Diale, for her foresight and commitment toward the youth of this community,” he said.
He appealed to the youth of Wattville who are yet to join the programme to come forward because it offers them opportunities that could potentially lead to employment.
