BOSA to fight for education and national civilian service

“In this youth month, the fight is always for education for young people."

The leader of Build One South Africa (BOSA), Mmusi Maimane, said to the learners of BB Myataza and Lekamoso Secondary Schools in Etwatwa his party would fight for a civilian service for young people to live in a prosperous South Africa.

Maimane was in the area to identify schools that could partner with BOSA to ensure they could improve the quality of education in the country.

“In Youth Month, the fight is always for education for young people. We are building multiple education systems where your earnings or income still show what type of education you get,” said Maimane.

The former DA leader said the country’s unemployment problem stemmed from a lack of proper education, adding that while youth unemployment sits at 75%, graduate unemployment was only 12%.

He stated this was a demonstration that educational opportunities had a direct correlation to equal opportunities, telling the learners that if the dream of the 1976 learners was an equal education, they still don’t have it today.

“As we reflect on June 16, we are saying can we assist learners post-school to find places of employment to ensure we have a national civilian service and that young people, the bulk of citizens of this country, can live in a prosperous South Africa.”

Maimane said the national civilian service his party is advocating for is a one-year national internship or learnership programme that will ensure children learn valuable skills once they finish school.

The ex-MP also addressed the community and youth at the United Church of Christ. He donated school uniforms to the learners of both Myataza and Lekamoso Secondary Schools and joined the community on a clean-up campaign.

“We will keep fighting for this national civilian service so that our young people can find employment,” he said.
