Pageant finalists help clean up the neighbourhood

Mr and Miss Benoni contestants, swapped their sashes for litter as they volunteer to clean-up Tom Jones Street.

What is beauty without a cause?

Contestants of this year’s Mr and Miss Benoni pageant were spotted parading down Tom Jones Street, collecting litter and removing illegal street advertising on July 29.

Partnering with Clean Projects, the dashing gents and glamorous beauties volunteered their time and energy to the community project, currently taking the city by storm.

“In celebration of the 45th Mr and Miss Benoni pageant, we decided to not only raise money for charity but to get involved with organisations that are making a tangible impact on the community,” said Claudine Stuart, pageant organiser from Rampage Modelling Agency.

Supporting her friend, Lerato Tau (left) on her journey to the crown is Charmaine Mureyi.

“Everyone is talking about Clean Projects and how their work is systematically beautifying our city. It was, therefore, an easy choice to partner with them and to lend them the able hands of our contestants.”

Sharing jokes and chatting as they went, the contestants filled rubbish bags to the brim, which the organisation later sorted into recycling bins.

“Spending time with my new friends is great fun, but looking at how in two hours we changed the appearance of the street is rewarding,” said Jonathan Kearns of Marister.

“If we all do a little, we can achieve a lot.”

This quartet of contestants volunteered their time to Clean Projects are Storm Geldenhuys (16), Jonathan Kearns (18), Matthew Claassen (17) and Joshua Patterson (22).

The crowning of Mr and Miss Benoni will be on August 20 at the aha Kopanong Hotel and Conference Centre.
