Gangster soon to hear his fate

Judge Ian Cox is expected to hand down judgment on October 13.

A notorious gangster from Lindelani informal settlement will hear whether the Pretoria High Court, sitting in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court, has found him guilty of all his seven charges on October 13.

Phumlani Nkosi faces three counts of murder and rape, two of assault to cause grievous bodily harm and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

About 10 witnesses have taken the witness stand since the trial started on September 2.

The 39-year-old was arrested on March 3 after charges were opened against him at the Benoni Police Station in 2011.

According to a court report, the accused assaulted a woman in her house in the early hours of March 25, 2011, causing Muzi Moletso, a deceased, to be stabbed twice when he tried to intervene.

He approached another victim, Sabelo Mthimkhulu, now deceased, on December 6, 2020, and accused him of stealing his property. Mthimkhulu apparently denied stealing anything. It is alleged the accused took out a knife and stabbed him.

On November 19, 2021, at about 23:00, a couple walked from a tavern to where they were staying. Nkosi, armed with a knife, approached them. The accused stole the complainant’s cellphones and uttered threats of grievous bodily.

He allegedly stabbed the couple. Allegedly, Nkosi took the girlfriend to another location and raped her.

During the court proceedings on October 10, a defence witness was to testify. However, she didn’t go to court.

Nkosi’s lawyer told the court the witness refused to come because she had received threats and was fearful.

In court, it was revealed that Nkosi always carried a knife and community members feared him.

Judge Ian Cox should hand down judgment on October 13.
