Learners safe from lightning storm

“We contacted an ambulance service and after an assessment of the learners, it was determined that they were either suffering from shock or fell during the rush to get out of the storm."

St Francis College has confirmed no learners were struck by lightning following yesterday afternoon’s heavy thunder and lightning storm.

This follows claims that four learners were struck by lightning while waiting for their transport outside the school premises.

“No children were hit by lightning,” said the school’s head of operations, Amanda Brümmer.

“This afternoon (January 29) as learners left school there was quite a heavy thunder and lightning storm at around 14:20. All learners waiting for their transport were escorted to the hall to get them out of the rain and away from any harm.

“It took about 10 minutes to get all learners into the hall and a further five minutes to identify learners complaining of injury.

“We contacted an ambulance service and after an assessment of the learners, it was determined that they were either suffering from shock or fell during the rush to get out of the storm.

“No serious injuries were identified and most of the learners who were upset were collected by their parents. Two learners were taken to the hospital on the request of their parents,” Brümmer added.
