LETTER: Metro’s greed out-weighs children’s joy

Danney McLean of Northmead writes:

I couldn’t believe it was true that the Toy Run 2024 was cancelled due to unrealistic demands made by the City of Ekurhuleni?

I bet, in lieu of the Government of National Unity, which is set to curtail corruption, some money-hungry officials have come up with a new way to continue enriching themselves at the expense of children.

It is disgusting that due to a potential fire hazard, the cost of a standby fire engine and personnel amounts to R100 000 for one day.

In the 41 years the Toy Run has operated, no incidents have been reported.

Last year, 14 500 toys were collected. That is something to be proud of, and I doubt the CoE could ever achieve this.

Are they jealous?

Will every event held in Ekurhuleni be subjected to the same extortionist amounts?

This is shameful.
