Madlabane on top at league meeting
He won both the U16 boys' 3000m and 1500m steeplechase events.
Siyanda Madlabane delivered a statement performance, stamping his authority on the U16 boys’ 3 000m and 1 500m steeplechase with two commanding victories that left little doubt about his class.
The 15-year-old middle-distance sensation received applause from the packed Germiston Stadium pavilion at the last Central Gauteng Athletics open track and field meeting on February 28 after his dominant displays in both races.
From the crack of the starter’s gun, he imposed himself on both races, setting a relentless tempo and daring anyone to go with him — none could.

Shadowing his Benoni Northerns Athletic Club teammate Mpumelelo Mokoena in the 3 000m, Madlabane took control almost immediately, stretching the field with a sustained surge that broke the resistance of his rivals long before the bell.
He ran with poise and purpose, turning what could have been a tactical battle into a one-man showcase of strength and composure.
He won the race in a season’s best 09:29.29, beating Adriaan Coetzee, who clocked 09:35.36 for second place. Zehan Spangenberg completed the podium in 10:00.80.
“The race was hard because I was challenging Mpumelelo. I managed to stay with him for two laps. After that I took over. With two laps to go, I was panicking because I wanted to better my time. But I pushed hard and won,” he said.
He was just as ruthless in the 1 500m steeplechase. Attacking the barriers with confidence and rhythm, Madlabane dictated terms from the front, combining speed on the flat with clean, efficient clearance over the obstacles to keep his challengers at bay.
The Daveyton resident clocked an improved 04:44.29, which was 5.27 seconds faster than the 04:49.56 he recorded at the third league meeting on February 14.
Ivan Crous was 5.80 seconds adrift after crossing the line in 04:50.09, while Cauilo Koen finished third in 04:50.61.

“The steeple was difficult. The field was full of competitive athletes, but I managed to better my time from the previous league meeting. I would like to thank my coach, Nkanyiso Mthembu, and the parents for their unwavering support,” said Madlabane.
With the provincial championships just a week away, he appears to be peaking at exactly the right time — and on this form, he will be a serious contender for double gold.
“All I’m saying is that we train hard and run easily. If you want to succeed in the sport, you must follow instructions and always listen to your coach,” Madlabane said.
