Why have a disabled parking sticker?

Soula Foord writes by email:

One of my bugbears is able-bodied people parking in spaces reserved for disabled people.

So when I got to my Benoni gym on Saturday morning and I spotted a really zippy looking little car with no sign in the window, I did not hesitate to report this to reception.

The owner of the car arrived – a man with a disability, with such attitude and anger.

When I tried to explain to him that I was on his side, and fight for the rights of people with disabilities, he asked why he should have to “label” himself as disabled and display a sticker in his window?

So, why then did my husband have to go to Johannesburg to get a sign specially made for his dashboard?

You just can’t win sometimes!

In future, I will not interfere if I see an able-bodied person in a parking for the disabled, like the 6.4 x 120kg bodybuilder with the double cab bakkie at a gym in Boksburg – I will just walk by.
