The brutal murder of infant Taegrin Morris is a sad and graphic reminder that life in this rainbow nation is cheap.
There is a pattern of lawless dominating our society today that, throughout history, was found in civilizations in the process of decline.
As the moral fibre of society disintegrates lawlessness becomes the order of the day. Law and order is in shambles.
Newspapers and TV channels are full of cases of murder, robbery and rape. Has all this numbed our sensibilities?
The crime incidences are piling up, the criminals are emboldened, and it looks like we need more than a meeting with guardian angels.
Many outraged South Africans are saying that crime is their Number One concern.
Even a casual perusal of daily newspapers reveals that the African dream is fading into a shadowy nightmare.
Crime is rampant, in Cape Town a serious crime occurs every 17 seconds. Police have 1 222 047 unsolved cases under review.
Our consciences have been so seared we are no longer offended by evil, but tolerate it.
Our constitution and founding leaders declared that governments are instituted to secure the rights of the people.
This then, is the first responsibility of our government to preserve the lives and liberty of South Africans.
Without any legal and moral absolutes we will continue to devolve into a lawless society where everyone can practically do as they please. Lawlessness is a curse worthy of our deepest fears.
Life is truly, to use Thomas Hobbes’ line, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short.
