Accounts are property owner’s responsibility

Audrey writes by email:

Re: municipal accounts

It is the property owner’s responsibility to ensure the municipality has the correct meter reading. My home’s electricity was unceremoniously cut off last week, Monday, without so much as a final notice from Ekurhuleni.

Upon enquiring at the municipal building, I was told that the contractors who read our meters did not have access to my house.

What nonsense, I have a live-in domestic helper there 24/7 and a door bell. There is always access.

They are simply incompetent.

The contractors have no limitations on how long they can continue to just supply Ekurhuleni with estimations on readings.

Mine was last read from December 2012 to June 2014 – 18 months – resulting in me having to sign an acknowledgement of debt to our dear municipality to the tune of R10 000.

Please don’t fall into the same debt due to their ineptitude.

Audrey
