Litter in the streets

Mr Robertson writes:

An open letter to the head teacher and staff at Benoni West Primary School.

I am writing this letter in sheer exasperation regarding the ongoing litter on the pavements outside your school every afternoon.

I have tried talking to the children; I have tried talking to the drivers of the transport who pick up the children.

There are a number of businesses in the immediate vicinity that keep their properties neat and tidy.

The pavements are also mowed and maintained by these businesses, only to have them look like a dump site in the afternoon.

I have two suggestions:

Keep the children on the school premises until they are collected. There are vast grounds in the school and vehicles can enter to pick up the children, or parents/drivers can enter the school grounds to collect the children. There are many schools in Benoni that adopt this procedure.

Secondly, have a programme during assembly that highlights good citizenship and the unacceptable habit of littering. Litter is a major blight on our country and it is the children who can be taught and make a difference in the future.

Neither the school nor the department of education had responded to the letter at the time of going to print.
