More than just grapes

A gem in Western Extension

Khutso Maphatsoe writes:

During a wet Saturday afternoon, I took my sister, Portia Mdlalose, to get something to eat at Grapes Pub and Restaurant on Russell Street.

We were welcomed by a waiter named Anthony who waited for us to decide where we wanted to sit.

Split into a bar section and a restaurant, customers can choose where they would like to sit.

We chose a table and got settled before Anthony came to take our order for drinks.

Portia chose the red cappuccino, which is a combination of rooibos tea and cappuccino.

It was the first time I had heard of it, so of course, I had my reservations about it.

I opted for a safer option which was hot chocolate; it always goes down well.

Portia said her red cappuccino was good except she would have liked it to be creamier.

Friday night fun at Grid and Grill

My hot chocolate was great, especially with the cold weather.

Anthony came to take our orders for the starter. I think he felt he was put on the spot a little when we asked him what he recommended but he laughed and answered his favourites were the chicken livers and the potato skins.

Portia was excited to taste the chicken livers, while I waited in anticipation for my potato skins.

I was pleasantly surprised at how tasty they were, the combination of cheese and bacon made my taste buds do a little dance as I took each bite.

While waiting for our mains, we chatted about life and how life actually isn’t as bad as it seems. All you need to do is take things as they come and laugh your way through it.

After about 30 minutes, our mains arrived and we were surprised by the portion sizes. They were quite big but we love food so we filled our tummies.

For my main, I chose the basil chicken with a salad because I had already had potatoes as a starter.

The chicken was well cooked with a delicious sauce.

Being a fan of seafood, Portia chose the kingklip with salad as her main meal.

“It’s nice and tender, it’s not too dry and reminds me of the fish in George – always fresh,” she said.

My favourite part was finally here, dessert!

Being a chocolate lover, I chose the chocolate volcano with ice cream.

The creaminess of the chocolate with the ice cream was the best part of the whole meal, I can honestly say I was in heaven.

For dessert, Portia had the New York cheesecake with ice cream.

“It’s not too rich and fatty and ice cream is always great,” she said.

The grapes theme can be seen throughout the pub and restaurant with the purple coloured walls and the table

clothes that have grapes painted on them.

The menu has a variety of meat to choose from such as chicken, fish, beef and pork.

A great addition to the menu is the ‘Create your own Pizza or Pasta at Grapes’ option on the menu.

Which is great for those fussy eaters who like choosing specific ingredients to have in their meals.

The wine drinker will be spoilt for choice with a wide selection of wines.

The establishment is a great place to grab a drink with friends while watching a game of soccer or rugby for those who love sport.
