Prostitution in Lower Western Extension a serious concern

"The situation is worse than ever."

Soula Foord of Western Extension writes:

I refer to an article on July 19, in which Brigadier Ntakuseni Lukhwareni of Benoni SAPS noted the concerns of the community to instruct the local officers to act on the prostitution and human trafficking in the area.

Every night 10 to 12 scantily clad females in Lower Western Extension ply their trade by beckoning motorists while lifting up their clothing and sometimes sitting wide-legged with no underwear.

They even do their business at an elderly woman’s property, by hopping over where the wall is broken, defecating, and leaving their condoms and liquor bottles behind.

I would like a follow up on this article, and I would like the brigadier to give us an answer as to which officers he instructed to sort out the situation and when we can expect to see results.

I even met with the brigadier with two other concerned residents, and was informed that many of them get arrested.

Maybe so, but this is not lessening the numbers on the street and it might be time to look for other solutions.

Editor’s note: Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele responded with the following regarding prostitution in Western Extension: “The matter regarding prostitution around Western Extension is of serious concern and, yes, the Benoni SAPS station commander noted the community’s concerns. Our crime-prevention team, as well as sector officers, are patrolling the area. Several operations directed at addressing prostitution during specific times are conducted. Unfortunately, due to limited resources, officers cannot monitor prostitutes on a full-time basis since there are other crimes which need policing too.”
