Great North road an eyesore

Today, Great North Road, once the pride of Benoni, is an absolute disgrace.

Tobias Mahne writes:

I have lived in Benoni for the last 15 years and the fence of my property is on the Great North Road border.

Growing up, we used to drive down Great North Road with all it’s beautiful overhanging trees and awesome green grass sidewalks.

It was always such a treat driving down this street and it would give you that calmness about life and nature.

Today, Great North Road, once the pride of Benoni, is an absolute disgrace.

I am now fed-up and I have lost faith in the Benoni municipality.

Editor’s note: According to Ekurhuleni metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe, the metro has prioritised the cutting of grass at cemeteries and cleaning thereof following a backlog of grass cutting and cleaning caused by Covid-19 lockdown restrictions.

“The metro is also pruning trees and ensuring safety at cemeteries,” said Gadebe.

Emmanuel Maphorogo, divisional head for parks and cemeteries in the metro, is pleading for patience from residents as the city is working hard to tackle the backlog.

“We are aware of the concerns raised by members of the community with regards to the cleanliness (at cemeteries and community parks).

We are working on it and we plead for patience,” said Maphorogo.
