Intense rugby at Benoni Rugby Club
There were some entertaining fixtures at Benoni Rugby Club.
The Benoni Rugby Club First XV came up against a very strong Klerksdorp side, in the Merlin Division of the Valke League, on Saturday, July 6, on Hoërskool Hans Moore’s fields.
It took Benoni 30 minutes to get onto the scoreboard through a try from scrumhalf Quin van der Nest.
At times Klerksdorp seemed to get the upper hand, but Benoni continuously came back with brilliant interplay.
They were, however, let down by not having a back-up goal-kicker on the field and failed to convert a single try, so points went begging.
Benoni were, however, ruthless when it came to scoring tries and outscored Klerksdorp by seven tries to five, but lost the game due to their goal-kicking frailties.
Hein Botha took the Man of the Match title for Benoni, because of his excellent general play and a try to his name.
The Benoni second and u-21 teams were victorious on the day.
Benoni seconds won a hard-fought match.
The result was in the balance until the last 10 minutes, before Steven Boshoff went under the posts for the winning try.
Flanker Jan Pienaar had a good game and took the Man of the Match award.
The u-21s were kept at bay by their North West opposition for most of the game, but Benoni proved to be stronger and won the match 15-3.
Leading from the front again was captain Jacques Dorfling, with Henk Liebenberg at his side.
The back line also combined well in this game, and the side look like they are settling well in the league.
First team try-scorers on the day were Quin van der Nest, Hein Botha, Hercules Jansen van Vuuren (two), Takkies van Staden, Joshua de Necker and Juandre Naude.
Second team try-scorers were George Waldeck, Hannes Vlok and Steven Boshoff.
Jacques Dorfling and Henry Scheepers scored tries for the u-21s.
All the teams will be in action this weekend, at Hoërskool Hans Moore.
