Top tennis juniors do battle in Benoni

Some classy junior tennis was played in Benoni when the KeyHealth Gauteng East Open came to town.

The national KeyHealth tennis series for junior tennis players moved from KwaZulu-Natal to Benoni, last week.

Tennis fever hit Ekurhuleni as over 350 young tennis players from across the country gathered to participate in the KeyHealth Gauteng East Open.

The annual tournament, which took place from July

10 to 14, is the Gauteng East Tennis Association’s premier junior event and is part of the national KeyHealth series, making it one of the most prestigious junior tennis events in the country.

This series is renowned worldwide as one of the strongest national junior circuits, and one of the most competitive line-ups of players in the history of the tournament was confirmed for the 2013 event.

Boys and girls tennis players in the u-10, u-12, u-14, u-16 and u-18 age categories competed in the gold and platinum draws at various tennis clubs throughout Benoni, as well as at the Gauteng East Tennis Association’s headquarters, at Benoni Lake.

The Gauteng East Tennis Centre hosted the u-14 and

u-16 boys, as well as the girls u-16 players.

The Benoni Central Tennis Club hosted the u-10 and u-12 boys; the Benoni Country Club hosted the girls u-18 players; Northmead Tennis Club hosted the u-18 boys; Northern Areas Tennis Club hosted the u-14 girls and Atlasville Tennis Club hosted the u-12 girls.

The finals for all the age groups were held on Sunday, July 14, at the Gauteng East Tennis Association’s headquarters.
