Three points in the bag

Benoni Northerns' first soccer team continue their winning ways.

The Benoni Northerns’ first football team continued a good run of form in recent weeks, by notching up another three points in the Easterns Super League Seniors Division One, with a 2-1 victory over Corinthians, on Saturday, July 13.

This follows a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Union FC, last weekend.

According to first team coach Flavio Mariuzzi, the team played really well, but could have buried their opposition if they had converted more of their chances.

Northerns opened the scoring after a shot from Gordon Brown deflected off forward Brogan Shrimpton and found its way into the back of the Corinthians’ net.

The opposition then equalised from a spectacular long-range effort.

The first half ended with the score at 1-1.

Midway through the second half, Northerns’ captain and defender Nkululeko Gungqisa latched onto a ball in the box that was parried away by the Corinthians goalkeeper, from a well struck Northerns free kick and put in pole position with the score at 2-1.

“At times we were all over them and played some excellent football,” said Mariuzzi.

“We are looking stronger and better with every game.”

The team remains second on the league table and a few slip-ups from log leaders Highlands Park, in future matches could see Northerns pull off a surprise and snatch first place.

“There are still a number of games remaining, so we still have a chance,” added the coach.

“We just have to continue putting the pressure on them and see what happens.”

Northerns’ second team set the tone for the first team earlier in the day, with a 3-0 win over Corinthians’ reserves.

Dylan Levanga-Slater scored a brace and Michael Edwards also found the back of the net for the home team.

Both teams will be in action at home this weekend, against Edenvale, and local soccer fans are encouraged to attend the matches and show support.

The second team will kick-off at 1.45pm and the first team at 3.30pm.
