Northerns slip up at Luso
Benoni Northerns FC's first team dropped to third place in the league after a defeat to Luso Africa.
Things did not quite go as planned for Benoni Northerns Football Club’s first XI, when they met Luso Africa in Primrose, in the ELFA Super League Division One, on Saturday, August 3.
Northerns were hoping to change their fortunes after a 2-1 defeat to table-toppers Highlands Park on Saturday, July 27, at Northern Areas.
But, according to first team coach Flavio Mariuzzi, the game did not go as well as he had initially hoped.
“It was a frustrating game to watch from the sidelines, because we had possession for long periods of time, but no final product,” he said.
“We held the ball well and looked dangerous at times, so it was disappointing to go down 2-0.”
Northerns could have turned around the game with about 10 minutes remaining on the clock, but former Mamelodi Sundowns player Manqoba “Shakes” Ngwenya sent a spot kick sailing over the bar.
The Benoni team now drop to third place, but still have a game in hand over second-placed Luso Africa.
They will meet the same opposition at the same venue on Saturday, August 10, in the second round of the ELFA Cup, and will be looking for a much better result.
