Benoni golfer through to Team SA selection

Amateur golfer Gregory Garner, from Lakefield, has qualified for the national final, after winning his flighting at the 19th Amateur World Golfers Championship, Gauteng elimination.

With a 70 net finish, his score saw him rank first in the six to ten flighting at Randpark Golf Club.

Garner is now a step closer to competing at the World Final as he moves into the next important qualifier in the competition.

“When a friend who qualified last year encouraged me to enter, I decided to give it my best shot and I am really excited to be through to the nationals,” he said.

“This competition is a great way to not only put your golfing skills to the test, but to also network with other golfers,” said Garner who has been an avid golfer for 18 years.

Garner has won an all-expense paid two-day trip to the National Final, which will be played in KwaZulu-Natal from September 9 to 11.

To qualify he will need to finish in the top two of his flighting as the competition gets a little more competitive.

“The course will remain a secret to ensure that everyone has a fair and equal opportunity to qualify,” said Craig Clay-Smith, spokesperson for World Golf Events South Africa, the SA event owners and organisers.

The stakes are high this year, with 75 regional winners vying for a coveted opportunity to play in the world final and compete against amateur golfers from all over the world in October.

“We wish Gregory the best of luck at he prepares to take to the fairways and greens once more and put his skills to the test to earn the Team SA blazer.”
