Northerns lose ground after defeat

Benoni Northerns Football Club’s first XI’s chances of catching up to second-placed Luso Africa FC,in the ELFA Super League Seniors’ Division One,were dealt a blow after losing 5-2 to Pro Solutions Panorama,on Saturday, August 17.

Panorama started as brighter of the teams and caught the Northerns’ defence napping in the early stages of the match,to open the scoring.

There was another scare soon after, when the away team nearly found a second goal after an attempted lop over the Northerns goalkeeper, Colte Smit, was cleared off the Northerns’ line.

The second goal, however, did eventually come for Panorama after a deflected effort off the Northerns wall saw an opposition player knock the ball past Smit in goal.

A well-struck Tony Ramalho free kick from out wide could have opened the scoring for the Benoni team but the shot just clipped the opposition’s crossbar.

The teams went into the break with Northerns 2-0 down.

When the second half commenced it seemed that Northerns had found a new vigour with the team starting to tick.

Defender Warren Vogel tapped in early to give Northerns their first goal while excellent combination work from the home team’s forwards later on was finished by Manqoba “Shakes” Ngwenya to draw Northerns level.

Graham Turnbull nearly directed a header into the Panorama goal to give Northerns the lead but his effort came off the post.

As the game wore on Northerns’ defence was caught off guard and Panaorama managed to score three goals that completely deflated the home team.

The result drops the Benoni team to fourth place in the league, although they do have a game in hand.

They will next play Top Bet United away from home on Saturday, August 24.
