Baseball players battle the British

Benoni baseball players are ready to take on the British.

The Great Britain u-18 baseball team are in South Africa, preparing for their five-game series against South Africa u-18 teams, at Boksburg Cardinals Baseball Club, from August 23 to 25.

The tournament has been arranged as part of a long term plan by the South African Baseball Union, in collaboration with Major League Baseball USA.

This tournament forms part of the overall plan for the 2016 World Classics and provides players with the international competition which is required to be successful at the World Classics.

Four Benoni Northerns Indians Baseball Club players are in the team who will be hoping to secure a series victory against the British team.

Rowan Ebersohn (17), Keagan Palmer (18), Bradleigh Peters (18) and Brenton Faulds (17) are all eager and ready to represent their country against Great Britain.

All four players agreed that their selection for the South African team is a proud moment in their baseball careers and all are excited about the tournament.

Ebersohn and Palmer are Benoni High School pupils while Peters attends Jeppe High School for Boys and Faulds is a pupil at Sunward Park High School.

Shaun Findlay, who has coached the players since they were u-12s, said they have come this far due to grit and determination.

“Their selection is a combination of many years of hard work and it is awesome to see them achieve,” he commented.

Great Britain’s assistant coach, Jarrod Pretorius, is also a former Benoni Northerns Indians player, so there will be no love lost at the Boksburg Stadium.

Spectators are welcome to attend the matches and the schedule for the games at Boksburg Cardinals is:

  • Friday, August 23: Great Britain vs South Africa Series Game One (7pm).
  • Saturday, August 24: Series Game Two (10am), Series Game Three (3pm).
  • Sunday, August 25: Series Game Four (10am), Series Game Five (3pm).
  • Monday, August 26: Great Britain vs Easterns (7pm).
