Ebotse Links Club Captain looks to the future

Ebotse Links's club captain Sheldon Monk has his sights set on the future.

Ebotse Links’s Sheldon Monk is a man on a mission.

The recently inducted club captain has his sights set on ensuring that Ebotse Links remains as the premier destination for golf in Ekurhuleni for years to come.

Monk’s role as club captain requires him to run the golf issues of the club, from managing leagues to handling members’ issues by working hand-in-hand with the Ebotse Links Steering Committee and Home Owners Association.

At present Monk is overseeing the men’s scratch league, mid-amateur league, senior league and handicap league, as well as a ladies’ and a junior league.

The club captain himself is an avid golfer, who plays off a five handicap and actively takes part in the league.

He has also been league captain and has served on the Ebotse Golf Committee for four years.

When asked why a golfer should consider joining the club, Monk said: “Ebotse Links is ranked 37th by Golf Digest South Africa, and this year was the second occasion that it received the Compleat Golfer Five-Star Experience Award.

“We are very proud of our facilities and our course and strive to ensure visitors receive a total five-star experience.

“It is a unique golfing experience and every day on the course provides a new challenge for golfers.

“Some courses you can play blindfolded, but not here at Ebotse – weather conditions determine the strategy of play on any particular day.”

Monk added that the club’s membership base is full of wonderful and competitive golfers who will improve any golfer’s game.

Monk is eager to improve the status quo of junior golf at the club and is keen to increase junior membership and strengthen junior golf.

“Junior golf is the backbone of any club, so it is important to ensure that our future is in good hands,” he said.

The club captain added that Ebotse Links members and home owners support each other and provide a family-like environment.

With the Benoni City Times’ Charity Golf Day just around the corner, Monk was asked for his opinion about what participants can expect at Ebotse Links and why golf days are so valuable.

He said: “All participants will experience fantastic service, excellent facilities and an immaculate golf course — all at a reasonable price.

“A corporate or charity golf day provides valuable networking opportunities for local businesses and also an opportunity to support a local community event, generating funds for needy causes.”

He added that, for the club, golf days bring different markets together and attract new visitors.

“The old adage goes that most business is done on the golf course, and this is completely true,” he said.

He encouraged golfers to come and experience the best facility on the East Rand and enjoy a well-run golf day from arrival to the game to the final meal.

“Golfers will definitely enjoy the total experience offered here at Ebotse,” he said.
