Youngsters make semi-finals
Benoni Rugby Club’s first XV were up against it again on Saturday, August 31, when Vaal Reefs proved to be too strong for the Benoni team with a score of 34-0 at Hoërskool Hans Moore.
The log leaders ran at Benoni from all angles and the home side had to defend for most of the afternoon.
Vaal Reefs proved that they are not top of the log for nothing and ran in six unanswered tries.
Benoni’s captain Renier de Jager had a tough task to do of keeping the guys together in this match.
With the first side’s season now over the players will go into the off season for a well-deserved rest after a tough season where it was difficult for them to get momentum with the change of leagues mid season.
Untimely injuries also disturbed the team as the same starting XV was rarely fielded.
The Benoni second team ended their season well and won a see-saw affair.
They managed to win the game in the last minute 24-23.
The second team ended fourth this season and can take a lot of positives into the next campaign.
Benoni’s u-21s ended the league in third place this year and have earned a place in the play-offs.
They defeated Vaal Reefs 16-12 on Saturday.
The team will now face Nigel in the semi-final in Nigel and will be hoping to get a win.
They have had a great season and a spot in the final would be the cherry on top for the Benoni youngsters.
Captain Jacques Dorfling played a big part in their success this year and together with Henk Liebenberg in the loose made a formidable duo.
