Northerns earn positive point in Ruimsig

Benoni Northerns Football Club’s first XI have been going through somewhat of a slump following a number of recent losses but the team showed spirit away from home to earn a draw against Rush Ruimsig SC on Saturday, September 7.

The withdrawal of a number of players recently, including the departure of former Mamelodi Sundowns player Manqoba “Shakes” Ngwenya who has signed a contract to play professionally in Botswana, threw a spanner in the works for Northerns and their team selection.

According to first team coach, Flavio Mariuzzi, the drawn result away from home is positive and will hopefully spur the team on as the ELFA Super League Senior Division One league draws to a close.

“We were 1-0 down for a long time in the game due to an unlucky own goal,” said Mariuzzi.

“The boys played well and showed great character and heart, which has been lacking recently, to turn around our misfortunes.”

Northerns managed to bag an equaliser courtesy of a Brogan Shrimpton header in the final stages of the match to take the score to 1-1.

“It is a positive result that will hope will boost the team going into the last three games.”

Northerns’ reserve team played well to earn a 4-3 win.

The Benoni team will travel to Panorama on Saturday, September 14.
