SA women win in Benoni

The 2013/14 cricket season got underway at Sahara Willowmoore Park, in Benoni, on Friday, September 20, with the Momentum Proteas women’s team claiming victory against Bangladesh by six wickets.

This was the first of a three-match one day international series between the countries.

Three wickets for Sunette Loubser (leg spinner) and a well-played 77 from debutante Lizelle Lee helped to steer the national women’s cricket team to a relatively comfortable victory over their sub-continental opposition.

Bangladesh accumulated a total of 149 in their 50-over innings, after South African captain Mignon du Preez won the toss and put them in to bat.

The women’s team always seemed comfortable chasing down the score and an 80-run opening stand from Lee and Trisha Chetty (39) put the home team firmly in the driving seat, to win the match.

The Proteas women chased down the score in 38 overs, losing four wickets in the process.

At the post-match interview, captain du Preez said she was pleased with the way her team played and praised the opening pair for a superb partnership.

Lee received the Player of the Match award for an excellent batting innings.
