Learner drivers can carry passengers

Vivienne Westray of Benoni Driving School writes: Your article in Benoni City Times of September 20, 2013, Pge 12, refers:

The article headed “Police Learner Driver Drama” states that learner drivers are not authorised to carry passengers.

Regulation 99-1-c of the Road Traffic and Road Transport Legislation states that only learner drivers carrying passengers FOR REWARD are not authorised.

In other words, if a learner driver (eg of a bus/taxi) is carrying fare paying passengers, this is not authorised.

It may also be of interest to your readers to note that learner drivers may tow a trailer, not exceeding 750kg, with a Code B (08) licence, but if wanting to tow a trailer exceeding 750 kg. a Code EB licence is a pre-requisite.

The K53 Driver’s Licence Test Report also makes provision for learner drivers to be tested on a freeway.
