Hennessy places fifth in Durban

Lakefield resident Bryce Hennessy competed in the TriRock SA Durban competition, a half-iron distance triathlon, in the heart of Durban, on Sunday, September 22.

The swim took place in front of uShaka Marine World, the cycle headed out to Ballito and the race concluded with a flat and fast three-loop running course

Hennessy took part in men’s 25 to 29-year-old category and placed fifth.

This is an excellent achievement considering that the Benoni man suffered a lung infection two weeks prior to the event.

“It was a good event and was well organised and fun,” he said.

“Initially I was aiming for a podium place, but had to change race tactics because of the lung infection, so I’ll take fifth position.”

The triathlete has been involved with the sport for just over a year and is setting his sights on next year’s Triathlon World Championships, as well as his next big race, the Half-Ironman 70.3, in January, 2014.

Hennessy said that, in order to be successful in the sport, an athlete needs to put in about 14 to 16 hours a week of training.
