Tommy Gun labours to victory
Tension was high at the Fighting Force boxing tournament, which took place at Emperors Palace on Saturday, November 9.
The bout card consisted of local and international boxers, such as Benoni resident Thomas “Tommy Gun” Oosthuizen, Hekkie “The Hexecutioner” Budler and Argentina’s Ezequiel Maderna and Hugo Verchelli.
Oosthuizen, who was making a seventh defence of the super-middleweight title, made it clear that he may have outgrown the division with a majority decision by the judges in a laborious fight against his Argentinian counterpart, Maderna.
The judge’s scores, after the fight went the 12 rounds, painted a different picture.
Although the scores were in Tommy Gun’s favour, the contest was much closer than expected.
Harold Volbrecht’s fighter won the first few rounds with ease, but Maderna held his own and, by the time that the sixth round had come to a conclusion, the Argentinian managed to open a nasty cut on Oosthuizen’s nose.
A number of questions will be asked by the Oosthuizen camp following this fight.
